AR-15 Optics: Eotech, Larue and Primary Arms

I’ve had my primary AR-15 for about 5 years and its gone through many iterations of optics. I’ve tried the standard carry handle sights, Eotech 512, Millett DMS-1, and now finally what I consider to be the best of all worlds: Eotech 517, Primary Arms Deluxe 3x Magnifier, Larue LT755(T) Flip-to-Side mount and Troy BUIS.

The Eotech 512 that I previously had was great, but even at 50 yards, I was shooting 6″+ groupings. The Millet DMS-1 brought those grouping WAY in with the 4x magnification, but it was heavy, didn’t seem extremely durable, required a lot of eye relief and while it could be dialed down to 1x, it wasn’t a true 1x where it was easy to keep both eyes open. The DMS-1 reticle was also hard to see in sunlight.

The Eotech 517 has a built in 7mm riser, so you can get a 1/3 cowitness with your BUIS, helping the reticle clear the front sight post. The riser also allows you to push the optic forward and it overhangs the front rail (without touching it). The Larue mount is extremely solid in both positions, the Primary Arms glass is very clear and the 3x magnification makes for very accurate and consistent shots. Larue makes two LT-755 mounts, if you’re going to align a magnifier with a standard Eotech (like the 512), get the (S)hort version. If your Eotech has the built in riser (like the 517 or 557) get the (T)all model.

in case you weren’t sure that the galleria mall was ghetto

it’s strange, because during the day, the people at galleria southbay mall are mainly trendy, rich redondo beach moms with their kids, but after work hours and on the weekends, it reminds me of the old mall in downtown long beach that only sold shoes.

this sign was on the door of the amc movie theatre inside the mall. i’m not sure if that means that weapons are ok in the rest of the mall and not the theatre, or if there was another sign on the main door that i missed and this was just a reminder.

by the way, tropic thunder was fucking hilarious.

2 tickets to the gun show!

last saturday eric and i went to the gunshow up in glendale. first of all glendale is way further than i thought it was. secondly, gunshows have weird ass people. i felt like i was in an snl parody of a gunshow. i asked one vendor if buying guns at the gunshow had the same 10-day waiting period that regular gun stores do… he went on to explain that “buying a gun on the spot can cost you $30,000 and up to a year in jail… i know, i’ve been to jail” < creepy!

eric and i quickly moved away from him but later we walked past this booth in a corner, and this cross-eyed, 4 foot woman pops out of a shadow with a collapsable shovel and says “have you ever seen a shovel like this?” eric and i didn’t even respond we just picked up our pace.

i did pick up a few different things though, including a $5 japanese government issued bill deonominated in pesos! apparently japan printed money for the philipenes when it occupied it during world war ii. i think i’ll get a sweet frame for it, and hope i don’t offend any philipinos.

chitty, chitty – bang! bang!

bored with dual wielding plasma guns and killing covenant in halo 3, i dragged my ass off the couch to go dual wield springfield xd-40′s with dave and kill paper. i hadn’t been to the range in about a year, and my accuracy reflected it. after about a 100 rounds though, my groupings were tighter and my shots were going where i wanted them to.

the range is damn expensive though. dave and i shot for only about an hour at the firing-line range in huntington beach and racked up a $120 tab. we’re prolly gonna go again in a couple of weeks if anyone’s interested. if we go with a larger group, and if we bring our own ammo, it shouldn’t be quite as expensive.

japan to tighten gun controls after shooting-related crimes surge

The number of shooting-related crimes to occur this year stood at 25 as of April 24 — nearly double the figure for the same period last year, a National Police Agency (NPA) report has shown.

Five people died in the shootings. Last year just 13 shooting-related crimes were reported during the same period, with only one victim dying.

In response to the rise in such crimes, the government on Wednesday held a meeting of its gun countermeasure promotion headquarters, and agreed on steps for the 2007 fiscal year.

The committee’s proposals include strengthening a system to expose use of guns, and building closer cooperation with organizations to control the weapons; putting more effort in investigating gun crimes; promoting measures to stop gun smuggling; finding secretly possessed weapons; promoting international cooperation to fight crimes; and securing residents’ understanding of measures.

The government’s gun countermeasure promotion headquarters was established in 1995. Each year it decides on measures government ministries should take to control weapons.

NPA officials said that 16 of the 25 crimes involving shootings that have occurred this year were yakuza-related. In one incident, a high-ranking member of the Sumiyoshi-kai crime syndicate was gunned down on a road in Tokyo’s Minato-ku in February. This month, a gangster fatally shot Nagasaki Mayor Itcho Ito in front of his election campaign office, and in another incident an armed gangster holed himself up in his apartment in the Tokyo city of Machida.

On April 20, the NPA ordered police across the nation to crack down on gun use connected to gangs.

“The dangerousness of armed gangs is vividly behind the large number of incidents this year,” an NPA representative said. (Mainichi)
