the funk is watchoo want

i picked up a used copy of warren g: g funk era at a music store the other day. so damn nostalgic, and they reference ’94 in like half the songs since that was the year the album came out i guess, and the year i started high school.

it’s crazy to think that 1994 was 14 years ago… half of my life ago…

SNL – “iran so far away”

i’m usually out, or more likely asleep by 11:30p on a saturday, but now that i’ve got tivo, i can watch saturday night live on sunday mornings again.

funny shit, and featuring the dreamy adam levine!

damn, the tube got tubed :(

so that sweet digital tv channel 5.1, “the tube,” apparently got shut down at the beginning of this month. according to their website:

“financial limitations ultimately contributed to its incapacitated state”

i have no idea what their financial model was in the first place, since they hardly ever had commercials, but i’m definitely going to miss it. it was the perfect background channel to have on.

according to wikipedia, their final song was A3‘s “Woke Up This Morning,” (the soprano’s theme song) and then faded to black at exactly midnight… apparently a nod to the show and it’s ending. cute.

bring back the tube!

3eb paying homage to peter gabriel or plagiarism?

my favorite lyrical rhyme of all time (kekeke) has long been from third eye blind – losing a whole year:

I took your stuff and put it in the basement
When I found out what the smile on your face meant

and then today i’m watching “the tube” digital sub-channel on tv and there’s a peter gabriel song called solsbury hill which has the lyrics:

Today I dont need a replacement
Ill tell them what the smile on my face meant

!

i have to assume this was just third eye blind paying homage to peter gabriel, but regardless i’m now conflicted about what my favorite rhyme of all time is. am i a poser for liking the 3eb version now that i know that it’s not completely original?

action item – life as usual

i edited together a few of the camera’s from costin’s show last month and made a action packed music video. well at least action packed in the sense that it’s packed with members of the action item. enjoy:

“it’s my life” – talk talk

i get to watch all kindsa good 80′s, 90′s and current music videos on the DTV channel “the tube” 5-5. it’s an over-the-air digital channel that just plays music videos 24/7, which you can’t even find on cable these days. if you have an HDtv, you should try hooking up a regular tv antenna to it. the local hd channels look better (compared to long beach charter hd), and there’s a few sub-channels (like 5-5) that are good, and all for free.

anyway, in the video for “it’s my life”, the singer mark hollis is totally just doing an impression of cameron from ferris bueller’s day off, doing an impression of principal rooney (when he’s pretending to be sloane’s father) it’s fantastic if you are familiar with both references, smirk-worth if you know of one, and pointless if you’ve never seen either. =p

2007 orange county fair!

on saturday, the wife, ben and myself went to check out the oc fair in costa mesa. we pretty much go every year since it’s a cheap and fun thing to waste a day doing. this year, ben heard rumors of a chicken burger where the buns are jelly-injected, krispy kreme donuts, so after about 30 minutes of searching, we found charlie’s chicken hut and ate the most delicious and gross creation ever made. my gut was heavy for the next hour:

we spent the rest of the day doing standard fair stuff. this year taka paid the dollar to see the world’s largest cow (last year she saw the horse, so now she feels complete). for the first time i saw the pig races, which was more entertaining than i expected it to be, and the concert at the end of the evening to top it all off? weird al yankovic! we had some super crappy seats, but they were free so i didn’t have much room to complain. fun day at the fair.

taka said she only had one margarita, but i swore she was on e:

i’m not tall enough to ride all the rides at the park?! … and according to the sign, i’m not even 5′ tall :)

ben almost won an electric scooter. he knocked 2 of the 3 blocks completely off the table… i bet the bottom block was nailed to the stand:

i uploaded all the pics to my flickr account. you can see them starting here, and browsing to the right:
